FREEZE YOUR CREDIT

A credit freeze, also known as a security freeze, is the best way to help prevent new accounts from being opened in your name.

A credit freeze makes it impossible for lenders and other creditors to access your credit reports without your permission and can be an excellent tool to combat identity theft and credit fraud.

Once a freeze is placed on your credit report, no one can get access to your credit file unless you lift the freeze using the personal identification number (PIN) given to you.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Nothing, it’s free. Note that a new federal law requires all three bureaus to offer freezes for free as of Sept. 21, 2018, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

HOW DO YOU FREEZE YOUR CREDIT? If you want to freeze your credit, you need to do it at each of the three major credit bureaus: Equifax (1-800-349-9960), TransUnion (1-888-909-8872) and Experian (1-888-397-3742). If you request a freeze, be sure to store the passwords you’ll need to thaw your credit in a safe place.
